An 11 car pile-up Tuesday evening around 6 p.m on McFarland Boulevard was caused by a chicken truck, injuring twenty-five people and sending two to the hospital.
The truck turned on its side after making a sharp turn, trapping as many as 40 chickens underneath, killing 30 and injuring a total of 300. According to Sergeant John Jones, the driver of the truck, Jeff Johnson, 45, made an illegal left turn which caused the accident.

"It was the biggest pile-up I've ever seen. Lots and lots of smashed bumpers but the worst part was the screams of the chickens. Those things sure do make a lotta noise, you know," Jones said.
Jones also notes that a retired local kindergarten teacher, Sarah Bernell, 63, was injured and was in need of medical attention. Bernell was riding in the car with her nephew, Mike Kenyon, who was driving.
Damages to the 11 other cars in the accident were minor, police report said. The injuries to the other 23 people in the cars were reported to just be bruises and none of the 23 were admitted to the hospital.
An ambulance arrived on the scene to take the injured to the hospital, including Johnson who had bruises and a possible broken ankle.
Hospital spokesperson, Clarence Dimotta, reports that Johnson is in good condition. Bernell has a slight concussion but is also in good condition.
The chicken company pres. Carlton Fitzsimmons reports the dead and missing chickens are worth over 700 dollars.
"It was so hot out there I thought we might have friend eggs for dinner," Jones adds.
The animals are the property of the chicken company, Alabama Poultry, Inc., and should be returned if found, Jones stresses.
